So there's not going to be a real lot to write about today so I'm just including a couple of first impression pics of Iguacu Falls as a teaser for what we hope to see tomorrow.
This morning we didn't have to rush up so I was able to get the blog entry finished and all our packing done before we headed down to breakfast. Nenad was picking us up around 10.40am so we got ourselves all organised and headed down to reception just after 10am to give us time to check out. We had an interesting experience at this hotel. When we checked in the guy at reception told us we were entitled to 30 percent off Food and Beverages. We both thought - that's a pretty good deal. So we had a meal in the hotel that night with drinks, then at drinks the following night up on the rooftop bar we got chatting to the barman and I asked why the 30 percent wasn't showing on the chit he gave us when we signed for our drinks. He said it would come through in the next transaction and proceeded to demonstrate - but it didn't. I queried at reception that night but the young man couldn't see anything on our reservation.
The following morning I talked to another lady on reception who initially said we didn't have it. I explained that it had been very clearly communicated to us that we had. She said she would follow up and if we were entitled to it our bill would be altered and if we weren't.... and before she could say anything I said with a smile - 'then we'll be discussing it further'. And left it at that. Next day I called past and asked if the matter had been resolved - she said it had been a mistake but that they would honour it and we would get 30 percent off our account. And we did. Pays to follow up!!
Nenad picked us up and took us out to the airport. He brought our luggage into the airport, then queued with us while we checked in, and carried our hand luggage up to security and was even going to scan our boarding passes for us! Craig laughed and said afterwards that maybe we tipped him too well the other day - we thought we'd never get rid of him. But seriously it was great service and like nothing we've ever had before - usually it's just the 'kiss and fly' scenario.
While we waited we enjoyed a little glass of wine and said au revoir to beautiful Rio de Janeiro and also toasted my little brother who turns 50 today. Our flight through to Iguacu was straightforward and we were met there by Markus who is our local guide while we're here. He drove us to our hotel - the Belmond Hotel das Cataratas which is actually situated about 10 kms inside the Iguacu National Park. It's absolutely beautiful - very old world and traditional. Has some lovely perks - free minibar - couple of beers in there and plenty of water. And a complimentary pair of Havianas each. Bargain. After we'd settled in our room we walked over the front lawn which then looks directly over one section of the falls - absolutely breathtaking. We then headed back up to the terrace area and ordered a couple of drinks. They seemed to be very expensive - a glass of wine was nearly $20 whereas spirits by comparison were much cheaper - around $10. But the measures are amazing - they bring the bottle to your table and pour there - it's a massive measure plus they sort of add one for the glass. I reckon one drink is really almost 4! So you don't need too many of them in a night. They also did bar snacks there so we decided we didn't need dinner and would just have a snack - crumbed fish bites for me and a club sandwich for Craig - hit the spot perfectly. Since tomorrow is Sunday it's a very busy day at the Falls so Markus suggested we start early - 7am!!! Shock horror!! So it's 9pm and we're tucked up in bed in preparation for our early start - us pensioners don't get up that early any more!
