Day 22,23 Karumba

Karumba Point, Queensland, Australia
No rush this morning, and this park has beautiful amenities with individual toilets with showers too so had a lovely hot shower and got my hair washed.  We'd breakfast then set off to do a bit of exploring though there's not that much to see.  But we checked out one of the little convenience stores then headed to one of the other caravan parks where we bought a kilo of cooked prawns.
Then Craig suggested a pre lunch time beer at the Animal Bar.  This is a sort of local icon which is part of the Karumba Lodge Hotel and is so named as its where the deckies from the prawn trawlers used to go. Apparently it was notorious for brawls and fighting hence its name. Next stop was the bakery where we got lovely fresh rolls and then headed back to the van to enjoy rolls with prawns, lettuce and mayo.  Absolutely scrumptious.
We'd a lazy afternoon back at the van - the highlight - not!! was my chair bucking me off. I've got one of those monstrous Oztrail sun loungers and I was reclining back and I don't know whether I didn't have it up properly of whether I was just too far back in it but all of a sudden I went whoompf (that was the sound of the air leaving my lungs) and I was lying flat on my back on the ground with my legs pointing towards the sky.  Shit it hurt and still does today though gradually easing.  The guy in the van across the way stopped by this arv and asked me if I was doing my exercises again today.  He'd watched my aerobatics!!
We left at 4.30pm to go on our sunset cruise.  This was fabulous.  The boat had 18 others and took us for a tour around the town area with really interesting commentary then we went about 7kms out into the gulf to an island which is totally sand.  There was only our group there.  As we got off the boat we were each given a folding chair then the crew set up tables with all sorts of nibbles and bucketloads of prawns with beer, wine or champagne served in real glasses.
We enjoyed a beautiful supper and watched the sunset.  Quite magical and the colours in the sky were amazing - shame I can't capture it all in the pics.  Once the sun went down we hopped back on the boat and headed back to town.
We decided to pop into the pub for a nightcap and there were John and Glenda - the couple we'd been chatting to back at Cumberland Chimney (who knew Glen's dad).  They were with another couple - John and Carol from Sydney.  We spent a lovely couple of hours with them and will more than likely hook up with them again on our travels.  John and Carol are hoping to do the Gibb River Road as are we so we've swapped numbers and if it works out they're keen to buddy up for the trip.
Today we headed down to the servo to fuel up, paid for one more night here at the park then thought we'd check out the Barramundi Centre.  Really interesting and I'll confess that's where I caught my barra - just in case you hadn't guessed!
We headed back to the Point and had morning coffee at Ash's place then back to the van for a lazy afternoon with the remaining prawns for lunch.  Also got a lovely surprise when I got a message from Bob Murdoch.  Smelter friends from way back might remember Bob from many years back - he came down to BSL from Weipa and was a planner at Line 3.  Anyway I replied to his message then next thing got a phone call and it was Bob and Lori.  They're doing a Queensland loop but the opposite way round from us and are currently in Cloncurry. However it looks like we'll all be in or around Lawn Hill/Adel's Grove/Gregory Downs within days of each other so we're going to try our best to catch up if we can.
We haven't yet tried the famous barramundi from up here so we're heading to the pub again tonight as its on the menu there.  If its as good as the prawns were the other night it should be fantastic.  Tomorrow pack up and on the road again - next stop Burke and Wills Roadhouse at Fourways.

Lovely pix, thankyou. Trip sounds very laid back and you two look great. BUT I hardly think Herself would be looking towards a camera with that size Barra on the end of a line! Safe travels
