We ended up getting fish and chips at Ash's place then home for an early night. Next morning we were on the road reasonably early and drove to Burke and Wills Roadhouse which was only about a two and a half hour drive. We had lots of power so decided to just get an unpowered site for the night. There's not a lot there but they do have toilets and showers and of course food and drink. We didn't bother unhitching and wandered over to the roadhouse to have a look around - not a lot in the way of provisions but we were still ok from what we'd got at Karumba. We had a drink from the bar and got talking to some fellow 'vanners - most of whom were heading in the same direction as us. We opted not to have tea at the roadhouse as there was nothing very exciting and in any case I'd bought sausages in Croydon which needed to be used up so we just had bangers and mash. Damn good sausages.
We'd had text messages from both John and Carol and John and Glenda telling us they were camped at the free camp beside the Gregory River so we headed off to there which was only about an hour and a half away. We timed it really well as it had been really busy the day before but many had left that morning and we got a spot right next to John and Glenda with our very own mini ocean view. We got settled in then chatted to them for a while then went exploring and found a shortcut to the hotel - why doesn't that surprise you! and so partook of a quiet afternoon ale before heading back down to the camp.
Lots of people were swimming in the river - you can get in upstream and the current will bring you speedily down to the bridge. But it isn't without its perils as most people seem to lose a bit of bark along the way. I decided I quite like having all my skin plus my back still wasn't right from my bucking chair episode. But there was a nice little pool just beside John and Glenda's coaster so we had a dip in there.
We joined them for a couple of drinks then had one of my many freezer meals for tea. Then not much later off to bed.
We'd suggested to John and Glenda that rather than taking their coaster out to Lawn Hill and due to there being a lot of uncertainty about availability at the Adels Grove campsite once they got there, that they come with us and just do a day trip from Gregory - it'sonly just over an hour away. They decided that might work better for them so we arranged to leave at 8am and take sandwiches for lunch. We'd a great drive out to Adels Grove - the road was remarkably good. We had a drive and a walk around the site and down to the grove which is absolutely beautiful then enjoyed a gold coin donation coffee in the large camp kitchen area they have.
I'd bought a couple of muffins at the little coffee shop in Gregory before we left so we shared these with our coffee. We had a chat to the ladies in reception and understood more about the difficulties they were having. The site was returned to the traditional owners back at the end of last year with minimal handover and the ladies we spoke to said they were cattle station people and were on a very steep learning curve in the hospitality industry. None of this is helped by their office phones not working and they're also limiting bookings as they don't have anywhere near enough staff to run at capacity so are trying to get set up so that all bookings are done online or via email. But they're maintaining smiling faces nonetheless.
Next stop was Lawn Hill where we parked and Craig, Glenda and I set off with one of the maps to walk what we thought was a quick easy track. Only there didn't seem to be a track at all. Eventually we realised that my map reading had left a bit to be desired and none of us had paid attention to the sign which said the bridge was closed so we were actually trying to follow a path which didn't exist on that side of the river.
By this time we were ready for lunch so all congregated at a picnic table to have our lunch. Meanwhile Glenda had picked up a bit of intel from some returned walkers who told her about a very worthwhile track. By this time Craig had enough of hiking and John isn't able to so the intrepid duo of Anne and Glenda set off. It was a brilliant walk - first up to the Indarri Falls lookout where the view was amazing then down the rocks to a swimming spot where the water was beautiful and we swam across and had a massage on our backs from the waterfall. One of those fabulous experiences which will live in both our memories for ever.
We headed back to the guys and told and showed them what we'd seen then we piled in the car for the trip home. We called in briefly to Adels Grove to see if they could tell us if Bob and Lori had arrived but it was a young man in reception and I didn't know whose name the booking was in and he could find neither Bob nor Lori's name. In any case this was only 2.30pm so it was probably too early for them to be there anyway.
We kept our eye out on the way back to Gregory to see if we could see them but since I didn't know any details of their rig we had no luck.
When we got back to camp it was happy hour so we enjoyed a couple of drinks then got tidied up. John and Glenda had said they wanted to shout us tea at the pub as a thank you for taking them to Lawn Hill. We all had a very tasty sea food basket and met Jo the publican who is a bit of a character. While there I heard from Mark that Scotty is due back into Gregory on Sunday night. We'd been planning to leave Sunday morning so we're still debating whether to hold back a day so we can catch up.
Today so far has been extremely lazy. A delayed start with a late breakfast then a few hours with my book and an hour or two chatting to John and Glenda. Should have said we caught up briefly with John and Carol the night we arrived here once they returned from a day trip to Lawn Hill. But they were having trouble with their electrics and we got a text from them during the day yesterday saying they'd moved on to get it looked at, so not sure when we'll next touch base. Its getting to about the time to go for a swim or a walk up the river so will leave it there and be back in another few days.
