Dawson City, Yukon, Canada
Puncture & Dawson Dick
Today should be a steady ride on the Klondike highway into Goldrush country. This route parallels the route used by prospectors in the 1898 Klondike GoldRush Skagway to Dawson.
We leave Carmacks in the sunshine stop at 5 finger Rapids amazing view over the valley and river.
We walked down to the viewing platform just above the Rapids this was one of many treacherous places for the stampeders many boats were wrecked on the rocks.

Just out side Dawson the bike starts to weave across the road first we thought it was the road condition but quickly realised no we have a problem. On checking we have a puncture.
Lucky we have a support vehicle. Tyre re-inflated Tom tries to move the bike to a repairers on the outskirts of town unfortunately it is not going to make it. Malcolm goes ahead to check, the guy is not around will be back later. While Tom is removing the wheel we go into town where we find a NIPA auto shop. They could have repaired the tyre but told Malcolm we need Dawson Dick. Not having mobiles that work in the yukon they rang him for us. Ok get the wheel and meet him back there in a short while. Which we did.

I've read about many situation like this in bike travelling books, when you are in trouble there are people who will help, by the time we got the wheel off and in the jeep back to the garage a guy had arrived and introduced himself as Dick, I jumped in his van with the wheel and he drove to his place. His workshop was fully kitted out and he had a stock of part used tyres, we found a Metzeler Tourance which still had some miles on it and within 20 minutes it was in the jeep and back to the bike.
It seems I had met Dawson Dick a guy who is well known by motorcyclists heading north who need tyres fitting. He was a great guy, would accept no cash payment only bottles of wine.

All sorted we settled into cabins at Triple J's having had so many days of riding we need to go for a walk. Previously we had found the Stern Wheelers grave yard on the river bank just up from the ferry these ships had been left on the bankside to rot away, so we went to find them .
First over the ferry which gives a great riverside view of the town.
A ferry connects West Dawson to Dawson in summer and residents living in West Dawson cross on the ice during the winter. A bridge is planned, although there is significant division among Dawson area residents as to whether such a bridge should be built. I hope they keep the ferry it is part of the Dawson charm.

Diamond tooth gerties following dinner at Klondike Kates was great fun old time music hall and casino. Not so many conditions here, the guys on the tables will teach you the rules if you need them .
