Lightning the load

Quinault, Washington, United States
Day started well for me, Tracy sent a further 11 pounds of clothes back to UK, finally making space for the tent. Tom has always had problems with numbers. 6pounds was closer.

Hurricane Ridge is our next point of interest. Part of the Olympic National Park. Several people had recommended the views so as we are passing up we go.

Yet again a beautiful road weather perfect and hardly any traffic so we were able to enjoy the steady journey up to the top.

The decision was to go to the top of the Olympic Peninsular then round to Forks, made famous by the Twilight books. This route unfortunately was not particularly interesting Forks is the first place in the US not to exploit the reason that made it famous if you did not know about the books before you came you would not know after either, Strange.

On to Ruby beach which was the second highlight of the day and made the drive worth while.

Sun was setting and the sea mist was closing in so we needed to find some where to stay.

First town Queets did not appear to have anything. We take a look at Quinault Lake find what looks like a lovely Lodge only to find it boarded up. This is not looking good. Luckily we see a sign for a National park Lodge on the opposite side of the lake. The road down to the Lodge is passed huge pine and fir trees. The area is very lush with ferns and lichen hanging from the trees. As the mist comes in you can understand why the Twilight books were set here.

The lodge is a rustic resort hotel built in 1926 styled after Old faithful Inn in Yellowstone it must have and still is very grand in a traditional way and reflects still the spirit of a bygone era.
