Today we head for Guatemala say adios Mexico which has proved a very enjoyable few weeks and not what we expected. Bikes packed, day a bit grey we head south again. The closer we get to the border the heavier the sky becomes. Inevitably it's starts raining actually pouring. Roads have not been too busy and the border appears empty. We have to check out of Mexico proving we have paid our tourist tax and get a refund for the bike importation. We had been warned this could take some time however few photos taken by the immigration guys showing it was still the same bike off we go . Well into no mans land it is a short distance to the Guatemalan border the bike has to be fumigated and we have to pay again to import the bike. This done purchased some Quezals $ at a ridiculous exchange rate passports stamped. They made a point of telling us we could stay for 90 days. We are ok to go all remarkably straight forward.

Almost immediately we cross the border the road takes us up into the mountains, beautiful lush land mostly banana plants and palms. We work our way slowly up the steep mountain sides traffic busy now lots of trucks. The cloud is covering the mountain tops hanging in wisps down into the deep valleys below us. A number of differences noticed almost immediately about our new country. The area we are riding through appears much poorer than just the other side of the border. Housing made of wood many just seem to be clinging to the mountain side. The road quality was ok but many potholes to negotiate. Land slides appear quite common. Topes have been renamed Commodores. Villages seem happy to dump their rubbish just out of the town where vultures play.
Huehuetango is our destination we head into the centre. This is a transit town and extremely busy.
