Leaving the hotel courtyard dropped the bike on the cobbles just after explaining to the owner who was a motorcyclist we were travelling around the world. The look on his face as he helped me pick up the bike needed no translation, " travelling round the world , cannot ride out of the car park" Fortunatly no photos of the event.
The border crossing into Nicaragua was crowded with queues of trucks , we were immediately pounced on by helpers and money changers. Two hours and after queuing for our temperature to be taken to check for Dengue Fever, having the bike fumigated, bike import and finally immigrating we thought we were ready to go, but know stopped by police. No Segura. Fortunately a helper was at had and minutes later we had the bike insurance and we're finally in Nicaragua.
Not actually sure where we are heading we start making our way to Granada or Managua, Lindsay not too well we start to look for a decent place to stop nothing quickly comes up we push on. Then the rain starts lightening thundery we think we can ride through it. The lightening is flashing all around us huge bolts hit the hills, one just in front of us every colour of the rainbow. Just as you think it has let up so torrential rain starts again. The roads and surrounding areas are flooded our gear has forgotten it should be water proof it is the middle of the afternoon and it is a black as night. No where to stop we ride at times 15 miles per hour is a fast as we can go. By now the water is streaming down the inside of my helmet and I am sitting in a pool of water as goretex seems to be working backwards letting water in and not out. Never have we ridden in conditions like this.
We have to stop, we find a fast food place by a petrol station as a refuge. The chicken and chips were wonderful. We were grateful that they just mopped up the river we created in the restaurant off our gear with out a complaint.
Incredibly we find that there is a Best Western Hotel 10km away.
