Out into the desert

Oruro, Departamento Autónomo de, Bolivia
New Year's Day had a tender start everyone had a lot of champagne last night.

La Paz is a city with many faces whilst the centre is ok as cities go the out skirts are possibly the worst shanty town we have so far encountered.. Muck and filth everywhere buildings falling down or not finished. I think this is not helped by what they are made of terracotta brick or Adobe clay. This led to a grimy climb out of the valley. The main city snuggled deep at the bottom of the valley we climb up and over to get back on to the Altiplano.
Our sunny warm morning unfortunately left us with cold sleety rain. It was bitterly cold we soon have to stop to put warmer and wet weather gear on.
Rear shock bolt keeps coming loose due to vibration on the roads, the leak on the shock still seems to be the same but will have to get it fixed when I return to UK in March.
Not much traffic just the normal buses the road to Ouro is not the best but it looks new. Why there are sections suddenly not finished is a mystery. The weather drys up but we are aware of huge electric storms in the distance which are common this time of year on the altiplano due to the vast open space. As we get closer a couple AMC draw our attention to it I guessing they have just ridden through it. Fork lightening was regularly battering the ground. We stop for a short break and watch, fortunately the storm seems to be moving across the plain away from the road.

Ouro is in the middle of know where, and a much larger place than I anticipate and we have to ride well into the city/ town to find the hotel. We circumnavigate a market again and the railway line which is running through the centre right on the edge of the main square is our hotel. The square or plaza sits in a natural amphitheatre as it is surrounded by hills rising sharply covered in half finished buildings of various colours. Every mount appears to have a statue or cross or something which over looks the town. At the top, of the highest is this huge white statue. Every where is barren only vegetation is scrub giving everything a dusty drab old appearance.
