Salt flats

Uyuni, Departamento Autónomo de , Bolivia
After the normal fun and games trying to leave town we are out in the sunshine.

We are in semi desert mountains the road weaves it way through canyons and then huge wide flats with hundreds of Llamas grazing. The colours escentuated by the blue sky give a beautiful contrast greens yellows and reds. Just as you are thinking this could not get more wonderful you see that we are still at quite an altitude and the salt flats are presented spread out in front of you disappearing in to the distance with the town of Uyuni at one end.

The road becomes an incredible twisting path which spread us down onto the flats. The temperature is now hot having kept all my layers on after yesterday's freeze I am boiling.

The paved road ends as soon as you get to the town boundary we are back on dusty stone and gravel. It's about another 30 km to the hotel before we head off we go to find the train grave yard. We could see in the distance a line of rust coloured objects but how to get there. We followed a trail but soon the ground changed to soft really soft shale/ sand almost impossible to ride on particularly 2 up so it was inevitable that one of us was to tip off. So close we have to back track and Marion and I walk for a bit. It is often at these times that you se what the real town places are like. This is a dump literally as rubbish was every where, it stank. Yet again it makes you thankful of where the lottery of life has placed you and what your minimum standard would be to live. Of course we have a choice.

The grave yard is a bizarre place in the middle of know where. Hundreds of carriages and general railway rubbish strunne over a huge area left to rot. Added to all this are then the lines of several steam trains left on the rails until they rust back into the ground. You can clamber freely over the engines and climb inside to pretend you are Casey Jones.

Fun over we need to find our hotel on the edge of the Salt flats we head out of town. The road soon becomes soft sand again I am really not happy riding on this we have a couple of super wobbly moments, that's it I'm off rather walk bit silly as the hotel is snout 15miles away. After a lot of discussion and a nosy round one of the other salt hotels which appeared deserted but the TV had been left on we get a taxi 200 $bobs to take us there. The guys follow on surprisingly quickly considering the conditions. The view is amazing right on the edge of the flats, salt and sand as far as you can see.
