Torres del Paine, Patagonia, Chile
Another beautiful windy morning we have been very lucky of late the weather holding particularly in these very wild out of the way places. Soaring almost vertically to nearly 3000m above the Patagonian steppe, the Torres del Paine (Towers of Paine) are spectacular granite pillars that dominate the landscape of what may be South America’s finest national ̈ park although not cheap to enter CH$18,000.
The mountains rise sharply in front of us as we ride across the river valley to the entrance of the park . The lake is turquoise blue turning in to aquamarine as the light changes with the wind blowing hard.the wave break on the shore with crests of white foam.
As we enter the park the wind is so strong that it is surprising we are not blown off we manage to negotiate the twisty gravel road and the wind at the same time.

The camp is about 70km into the park we select a great spot in front of the lake and mountains glaciers hanging sparkling in the sunshine and set up camp. The wind is still blowing really hard it is a wonder that the tent and any of our belongings are not going to blow away.

Camp set up we have lunch of cheese and ham sitting on a bench over looking the mountains.
We watch Condors soar on the thermals high above us.

It is now 11.30pm the moon has just risen full I think and the air is dead still. Not a breath of wind moves. It is very peaceful. The odd animal call in the back ground or a car running along the road otherwise all is still.
