Swimming with the sharks

Cairns, Queensland, Australia
Up with the dawn chorus as we are going sailing. Quick call home good to hear all ok there so we set off to walk to the harbour.
Arrived a bit early so time for a coffee bit disconcerting that sea sick tablets are offered with your cappuccino.

7.30 we are allowed on board, us and 6 others. Safety talk was conducted over Coffee and a Danish very civilised.

We head out under motor power to Green Island a coral cay just off the coast. As we start a pod of dolphins come chasing towards us our day looking good already. Takes an hour or so to get to the reef the sea beautiful opal green blue sun is shinning. What could be better.
The anchor dropped and secured we are given the plan for the day. Snorkelling, exploring, lunch snorkelling sail home. Kitted up we all start to get in just as we do Matt the ship mate tells us to get in quietly otherwise we will scare the Sharks.... Not joking 2 reef sharks were circling the boat . Do not worry easy for them to say.

We were given a bit of a tour of this part of the reef show a giant clam then a green turtle appeared and swam along with us. Until too many people scared him off. The Sharks still circled.
We snorkelled for hours amazed at type of fish even a little Nero lots of coloured parrot fish some huge black grouper type who were used to the boat and knew they would be fed soon.

Lunch was quite a feast I think we were benefiting from the lack of passengers. The scraps that we left chicken bones and all led to a display like I have never seen before. Someone threw a bone into the sea, before it had even landed in the water a huge fish had it and was devouring it. This followed by several others, the number of large fish waiting was amazing. Even the Sharks came to have a look. Makes you think about the saying being fed to the fishes!....
Those who wanted to go could go over to green island for a wander round. It was quite busy in the centre 5* resort we walked to the far side of the island to take a closer look at the reef. Tide was low so you could walk to a coral shelf the other side was a beautiful lagoon no swimming though. The day was very hot with little shade available the best thing was to go swimming so back to the boat for another snorkel,
Our journey back was by sail for a short time unfortunately there was little wind we did not make much headway so back on the motor.
