Messing about on the river

Ho Chi Minh City, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
Last night after a very good dinner, all included in the tour, we ended up at the Rex Hotel, a very posh place. It was the favourite watering hole of the foreign correspondents during the Vietnam war. £7.50 for a glass of white wine, you wonder why so many newspapermen are alcoholics! The view from the bar deck was wonderful, see the pic of a nearby building.
This morning we set off for a boat trip on the Mekong river . Quite a basic boat and a choppy river. However we got to one of the main islands ok, and had a number of events arranged. First was a tour of a factory (in a thatched hut - can I call it a factory? ) where they process coconuts to make sweets. Also make rice papers. Then we had some local fruits, tea and an exhibition of Vietnamese singing. Then a ride in a donkey cart to link up with a sampan to take us back to our boat. All in all quite an active morning.
Then we went to another pagoda, this time a Buddhist one, with a huge statue of the Happy Buddha. Quite an interesting religion, although we have obviously only scratched the surface.
Then a Vietnamese lunch some parts of which were delicious, some less so. But it's all an interesting experience.
This evening Jem & I walked around the town for a while taking in the sights. Went through the street market which was teeming. Food stalls cooking food on the side of the road, health & safety don't seem to exist!
Bought cakes for dinner, and it's early to bed as we have to get up at 4 to get to the airport for the next leg.
