Mostar -- September 2
We woke up very early to get to the train station for our 7:05am train to Mostar. We got to the station early and were thoroughly impressed by the loveliness of the train! The ride was spectacular through mountain scenery. Shortly after the town of Konjic we officially left Bosnia and entered Herzegovina. Immediately it became clear what the difference is -- the vegetation changed and the climate became more mediterranean. Pomegranites and grapes are growing everywhere, and it is incredibly hot!!
Upon arrival we bought our bus tickets for tomorrow morning's trip to Split, Croatia
. The bus leaves at 7am and cost about 14 euros/ticket. We took a cab to the hotel and of course it was too early to check in. So we wandered around a bit and got a glimpse of the famous "Old Bridge". This beautiful bridge had been a symbol of Mostar for centuries and had represented how the people of this city, despite coming from many different backgrounds, had lived harmoniously. All of that changed during the conflict of the 1990's. The bridge was destroyed during the war, but in 2004 a reconstructed version was built to once again span the gorgeous green Neretva River.
Off to take more pictures....
Ended up taking it easy today as Efren isn't feeling well. Wandered through the town enjoying the ambiance. Mostar seems much more touristy than Sarajevo. Probably because many folks come here for a day trip from Croatia. The one nice thing about the tourists is euros are accepted everywhere here, so no need to try and get more Bosnian Marks!
