Doi Suthep & Royal Winter Palace

Chiang Mai, Chang Wat Chiang Mai, Thailand
Just a half day excursion today to give everyone a free afternoon. We headed to Doi Suthep, a mountain ("doi") west of Chiang Mai. It is 1,676 metres (5,499 ft) in elevation (about twice the size of Tremblant) and is one of the twin peaks of a granite mountain. 16 kilometers up the VERY winding switchback road led to our first destination, the Bhuping Palace. It's the winter palace of the royal family where they stay from December through February. Although the palace itself was closed for renovations, we toured the spectacular gardens, saw the Royal Guesthouse & log cabins. Super strict dress code led to Vic's fashionista rental outfit - new trend?
Afterwards we headed to the nearby Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, the north’s most sacred temple . A staircase of 306 steps leads to the wat (we opted for riding a tram!). Within the monastery compound is an exquisite Lanna-style, gold chedi topped by a five-tiered gold umbrella – spectacular. Although a bit hazy, there were some lovely views of Chiang Mai from the outlook point.
Back to the hotel for some lunch by the pool (went by bike to Le Lapin, biking home home with pizza boxes - yes it can be done!). Quick trip for some homemade ice cream made the afternoon complete.
Supper back at Whole Earth then shopping along the main road in the famous Chiang Mai Night Bazaar. Super funny...the girls found cute tank tops featuring an elephant on them. After haggling & settling on a price with the vendor they both turn to Vic & say "oh Daddy" (looking for cash of course). Then I notice the guy in the next stall laughing to himself. He says to Vic in broken English "students still? You father?". Vic confirms "yes", to more chuckling and the Thai vendor says "I have some of those also". No matter the culture, it's a universal truth...

Found your first comment, it is on the actual picture of Vic in his fancy pants. Think it's because you clicked "comment" when the picture was still open so it ended up on the picture instead of the main blog :)
Watch what you wish for in terms of weather. It was 46 degrees here yesterday with the humidity. That's just stupid hot. I'm never again complaining about the heat in Montreal...
