Juneau, Alaska, United States
Today's port was Juneau. The weather was rainy with temperatures in the 50’s (which is what they were most of the days we were in Alaska). We took a bus tour to a salmon hatchery, Mendenhall Glacier and a Salmon bake. The hatchery was very impressive as all the salmon come back there on their own near the end of their lives to lay their eggs and die. What the hatchery does is harvest the eggs and use the salmon in some way so it is not wasted. Then they keep the eggs in an incubator until they hatch and in a cage until they reach a certain size so they can survive on their own in the wild. At this time they release them and they go out, live their full life and return when they are ready to start the cycle all over again. The survival rate of this method is much greater than if the salmon laid their eggs in the wild so the salmon population is greater as a result. The Mendenhall Glacier was the second stop on our tour today. It was once again an amazing sight to see and there were a couple powerful waterfalls flowing next to it. This was not a tidal glacier but is did rest on the edge of a lake and there were many large icebergs (larger than the ones by Hubbard Glacier and Glacier Bay) floating in the lake. It was a beautiful glacier and we would have enjoyed it more if we were allowed more time there and it wasn’t so rainy. Our final stop was the Salmon bake where we enjoyed a delicious meal that of course featured salmon being grilled while we watched. We had a couple hours to do some souvenir shopping then it was back to the ship for our second formal dinner.
