Hubbard Glacier, Alaska, United States
Today was a day at sea. We slept in then continued to familiarize ourselves with the ship. A little before 5:00 p.m. we suddenly noticed we were able to see land so went out on deck to check it out. We were approaching Hubbard Glacier. This is the largest glacier we would see on the cruise being 76 miles long, 400 feet tall, and 6 miles wide at the face where it met the water making it a tidal glacier. The next couple hours were spent watching this magnificent glacier as it showed its beautiful blue colors. We saw many displays of calving (big pieces of ice falling off the glacier into the bay) which was very exciting. The size of this glacier was hard to imagine but was explained as being three times taller than our ship. It was quite a vision. After Hubbard Glacier it was time to get ready for our first formal dinner of the cruise. It was very delicious and our dinner companions were very pleasant as well (we will be at the same table with them for dinner throughout the cruise). After dinner we enjoyed a musical production "Do You Want to Dance" performed by the Princess singers and dancers. It was a tour through many different types of music and dancing and was very energetic and fun.
