Messina, Sicily, Italy
As was so often the way we arrived for breakfast at the same time as Philip and Anna. We were in the Vista and had a nice spot by a window. They had been affected byte gridlock in Athens yesterday as well and commented that the sites they could freely visit in 2000, in 2006 they could get good photos of and yesterday the bus could not even stop in a spot they could take photos from.

We spent the morning on the balcony while Irene went to a salsa class . Irene and Raewyn went to the single and solo passengers' lunch – which they wouldn’t do again although they did get a free glass of wine. John and I joined Philip and Rex for trivia where we met a couple from New York State and got a respectable but non winning score. We now know Tulips come from Turkey!!

It was a smooth sea all day although the cloud cover did cool the afternoon temperatures. We were also going at a fair pace as we were told there was a seriously ill passenger so we were going to get to the next port soon after midnight rather than early morning.

Raewyn and I went to the Indonesian afternoon tea. We shared the table with a couple from New Hampshire and others from Canada and had a nice hour. There was a choice of 4 teas and 2 coffees then we were offered an interesting mix of food that included banana fritters, coconut filed crepes, scones and pieces of dessert style cakes. There was also discussion about the internet on the ship and various excursions . The couple from New Hampshire had taken upgrades and were sharing a large state room with their adult children which they said had worked out much cheaper than 2 state rooms would have. They said they heard the boat had been overfilled for the 'ordinary’ cabins hence the deals.

At 4.30pm we had to attend the disembarkation meeting. It took half an hour to give us some very basic instructions that finished with read the letter we would get that repeated them anyway. Then most of the ships staff came on stage to farewell us. We also got the ‘satisfaction survey to complete. We had had excellent service but it is irritating to be continually told to give a 9 rating for everything.

Irene, Raewyn and I went to hear Zack at 6pm and were the audience. We had to leave at 6.30pm to dress for the formal dinner and by then there were 4 people there. John was feeling better but we asked for a table for 4 which was fortunate as he again flagged during dinner and didn’t stay for dessert . The meal was excellent and we were amused to find soufflé on the menu that didn’t need to be ordered in advance.

We went back to hear the last of Zack’s session during which he commented that he is listed as a solo guitarist and his programme is called unplugged when he in fact also sings and uses lots of equipment. He was again excellent, especially when he played a couple of straight instrumental songs. There were less than a dozen people there until the end when the room began to fill up – for the following session which was a game show, ‘the Marriage Game’. We fled to the Piano Bar where they were playing ‘Pick the tune’. We left after 12 tunes of which we had written answers for 6. We gave our attempt to an Australian couple with the warning they might well all be wrong. We then found we had to put our clocks back so it was only 8.30pm but nothing else appealed so we opted for an early night as we have an early start tomorrow.
