It is not often a horse and cart goes past
while you are eating breakfast. It happened today. We were half packing and
half breakfasting when I heard a noticeable clip clop.
We finished the house packup and seemed to
leave with a lot more stuff than we arrived with. Partly this was left over
breakfast food and partly poor packing of bags as we had left some stuff in the
car.
We headed to Singen to collect Katherine. When
we booked here she did not know her friends would be moving to Basel. We had
booked in Regensburg to break the journey and it still did but it was still a long journey, so this turned into a driving day again.
We did try a side step (for a cache) and it would have worked
if we had taken the park 250m away. As the roads were clear we tried to get
closer and got caught in "one-ways", so it turned into a drive through and petrol
buy then we headed for the train station.
With Katherine in the car, we did a series of
autobahns to get to Regensburg with the route taking us near Stuttgard. The
other route that we could have taken went near Munich. John did some parts at 160km/hr+ (100 mph) and was still passed by several cars. The autobahns are so safe and well constructed. Not all the roads were at that level, but
they were all good. The countryside was attractive with fields, town views, the odd river and wind farms. A few bridges went straight over both the
river and nearby villages or towns ,which looked nice from high above.
We stopped only twice on the way ,and both times
at the motorway stops. The first was for lunch and the second for a coffee for
John who needed a boost for the last 200km of driving. Singen to Regenburg is
about 450km. Via Munich it is less than 400km but a slower journey. We went on
3 autobahns and the move from one to another was seamless. The GPS showed
interesting spaghetti loops at many of the interchanges that had me admiring
the motorway engineering.
Then we had stress at the end getting into the
apartment. Somewhere on the way an email was sent with information we needed,
but it was not on my phone. Between poor reception and a person who was not
really willing to help, it took time for us to work out what to do. Katherine
came to the rescue by finding the errant email on the computer. We did not have the log-in code to open the key safe, and the person who texted us kept sending us information we already knew, but not
what was required, despite our messages to him. It took about an hour to get in and should have been 5 minutes. The
only up side was that we were not planning to do anything except get sorted
with gear, food etc, and we did all that.
The apartment is OK and is fair for the
price. We will be commenting on the poor communications and the lack of an extra
towel for the third guest. Usually we would think that picky but we are not
inclined to be nice about it at present. The place does have a car park, very
good wifi and is about a 30 minute walk to the centre, so these are bonuses.
Our food for the evening became KFC as we didn’t want much and
supermarkets all seemed to be closed (Sunday). Katherine spotted they had a chizza which
she knew about and decided she had to try. It has chicken as the base for a
pizza. She said it was OK but they forgot the pepperoni. We just had chicken strips. It is the first ‘American’
style food for the trip and did fill the need.
We then returned to appreciate the Wi-Fi here and catch up
on a lot of on-line things, before a late bedtime.
