Highlights Having a casual day in the area and eating local asparagus.
After
a big day yesterday, we wanted to explore locally. We bussed to Chiswick
midmorning and walked to the Chiswick House and Gardens. We had read the
gardens were nice to wander around, with a number of caches, and it was free to
enter. Chiswick house, an 18th century villa, looked interesting,
but it was not something we were keen to do today.
We
got off at the Police Station bus stop and walked, via an underpass, to one of
the 4 entrances. The gardens included a couple of obelisks, one with a statue
of Venus on the top, as well as ponds with swans and a number of paths to
wander along.
In the middle of our wander we spotted a cache that was just outside the park. It looked interesting and was. It was a memorial to the first V2 rocket to land in London, in September 1944. Three people died in the attack being a sapper on leave visiting his girlfriend (he was recorded as being on active service at his death), a 3 year old girl (who did not have a mark on her but suffocated) and the woman who ran one of the local shops.
Their details are on a sign next to the plaque. The other nice aspect was that a Chiswick group visited the area where the rocket was made (Peenemunde in the Baltic) and planted a cherry tree of the variety that were on the road where it exploded.
We had a light lunch at the café in the middle and then headed
back to Jane and Ian’s for a break, after finding a few more of the caches in the park. John had a snooze and then we walked to
Hammersmith to get a bit more orientated and then home via a coffee shop and
the Tesco supermarket we had been to on a previous day.
Jane
and Ian were home after having a good lunch with friends, but otherwise a
frustrating day with technology. Their modem was due to be replaced as they
were going to fibre. They had missed the delivery of the new one as we were all
out and the company had cut off the old system. Jane’s phone had frozen
yesterday and so any messages she would not have received and she could not
chase them up without the phone. Also the company she had bought the phone
through were very unhelpful.
However, she headed back to the company, who sorted her phone and also gave her access to wifi. She was much happier on her return. We had a light tea based around one of my favourite seasonal foods - asparagus. Yum!!
