Dubrovnik, Dubrovnik-Neretva County, Croatia
Well, it's been a few days.  Among other things, we had some internet issues for a couple of days, but everything is good now.  Sunday and Monday were a quiet two days.  Sunday, we decided to go and see if we could find some of the beaches near us.  Now, you have to understand that the word "beach" is used very loosely in Croatia and means basically any place where you can go swimming, whether it be off big rocks, platforms or actual beaches (though they most often pebble beaches).  Water shoes are a must here.  So we headed down the 200+ stairs and past the Pile Gate, but this time turned right, away from the Old Town.  We found the first "beach" that we were looking for, Šulić, but only from above, and couldn't figure out how to get down to it.  It didn't look too inviting anyway, really just a platform.
We headed on and found Danče Beach, which is a combination of platforms and rocks and is much bigger and spread out.  The setting is pretty and the water was gorgeous.  Afterwards we went for a lunch of excellent mussels at a little restaurant, Sesame, that we had passed on our way in through the park to the beach.  The rest of the day, we just chilled at our apartment and did some trip organising and had some cheese and potato bureks for dinner that we had picked up at a bakery along the way.
Monday was another beach day.  This time we headed down the road past the Old Town and past Ploče Gate at the far end of town, to Banje Beach, the most popular beach in Dubrovnik.  And it is an actual beach, though mostly pebble, with some imported sand thrown down in some places, especially on the high-end side with the sun-beds and umbrellas.  We were on the "peasant" side, just sitting on the ground.  It certainly is an interesting place.  We went for a dip and stayed for a while to dry off, then headed out to see if there was anything worth seeing further down the road past the beach.  Turns out there wasn't much, so we turned back and went into the old town to find some lunch.  We went to a local-looking place that seemed to have a good menu, and had a couple of truly awful salads.  Maybe the rest of the menu was good--the place was certainly busy.  Can't all be winners, I guess!
Later in the afternoon, we took the cable car up Mount Srđ.  The idea was to check out the Homeland War exhibit in Fort Imperial, a Napoleonic era fortress built by the French, and then have drinks and watch the sunset at Panorama Restaurant.  Well, I guess a few (hundred) other people thought it might be a good place to watch the sunset, too, and we couldn't get in.  So, we headed down and wandered through town a bit, and had dinner, some excellent ragus, one fish and one beef, at a little restaurant (inventively named "Gourmet") in one of the laneways.  Then home for an early night before our very early wake-up for our day-trip to Montenegro on Tuesday
