A few days in Cordoba

Córdoba, Córdoba Province, Argentina
Thursday morning we were up and off to the airport at 8:00 for our flight to Cordoba.  Our host, Emanuel, had arranged for a taxi for us, so we had no stress there this time.  Flight was a little late departing, but it didn’t really matter, we were going to be early for our apartment in Cordoba anyway.  Caught a quick, cheap again, taxi into town.  Our apartment this time is a highrise (we are on the 12th floor) and is not as nice as our place in Salta, but also is less than half the price, and we are only here for 3 days.  And luckily, since we were indeed early for our check-in, there is a lovely little restaurant, "It! Italy", right below us, so we had a wonderful lunch when we arrive and waited.  We had no excursions planned and spent 3 days just wandering around town checking out the sights.  Cordoba is a university town, and particularly in our neighbourhood of Nueva Cordoba, so it has a very young, and often an artistic, vibe.  When we first arrived, it took us a while to figure out that it is graduation time, and there were lots of processions of honking vehicles with kids in wild costumes hanging out of trunks and in the backs of trucks.
Mostly, we just wandered around town, but we did seek out a few specific sights.  The Eiffel Wheel, a wrought-iron “ferris wheel” dating from the early 20th century, by the zoo in Sarmiento Park was very difficult to find a way to get near.  The “Iglesia de los Capuchinos” is a spectacular church, as is the Cathedral of Cordoba in Plaza San Martin.  (There is a Plaza San Martin in just about every town around here because he was the “Liberator of South America”).  La Cañada de Cordoba is a channeled river that meanders its way through the heart of the city and Güemes is a funky, artistic, gastronomic area near where we are staying, where we had some very good meals.
All in all, a very relaxing and interesting few days.  Next stop: Mendoza.
