Monday morning, after a well deserved good night's sleep, we
headed out "towards the water" to see what we could see. The
weather had cooled off quite a bit and was looking a bit threatening to start,
but it turned out to be a pretty nice day. Walking east towards the River
Plate, we came past the end of the Puerto Madero neighbourhood, as we later
found out, one of the most high end parts of Buenos Aires. We then got to
the edge of the huge ecological reserve that runs along the waterfront.
Unfortunately the reserve is not open for the season yet, but there is an enormous
pedestrian walkway (with food stands every 50 yards) that runs along beside it. This provides a
view of a lot of the wetlands. The road
that runs along beside the walkway is also a favourite parking spot for every
kind of camper van and bus imaginable.
Some of them clearly have not moved in years (decades?) but others are
obviously much more mobile. After walking the length of the reserve, we crossed
over and headed into the Puerto Madero neighbourhood proper, where we stopped
at a wonderful Italian restaurant overlooking the yacht club on Rio Dique,
which is an inland channel that runs parallel to the river. I had a fabulous lasagna and Carol had a
great gnocchi. Then we headed back
inland and through Plaza de Mayo by the Presidential Palace for a straight run
back to our apartment in San Telmo.
Lunch was so good, and filling, that we didn’t eat dinner at all. We were pretty beat after a lot of walking.
Tuesday, the weather forecast said cool, but no chance of
rain, so we got tickets for the hop-on-hop-off bus and headed out to catch the
first one down our street a few blocks.
Well, it started raining even before the bus came (it was 25 minutes
late, too) and didn’t really stop all day.
Just some times less than others.
So, it was a pretty wasted day—hardly any photo ops and too cold and miserable
to get off the bus and wander very far. We
got home and tried to thaw out, then headed just a few doors up the street to a
place called Peron Peron Vivo for some comfort food. I had a really good ossobuco but Carol’s shepherd’s
pie was disappointing.
Wednesday was a better weather day, still no sun but no rain
either. We headed out in the morning in
the direction of the Obelisco and Teatro Colon via Plaza de Mayo and then made
our way back down towards Puerto Madero to see a couple of things we missed
previously. Then back around to San Telmo, stopping for lunch at Casa Telmo,
just by the market, for some tasty French toast and avocado toast. Tonight we go to a tango dinner show!
