A Little Rain, a Little Pain

Caye Caulker, Belize, Belize
Man, time is starting to fly! So, Saturday night we went out for dinner to Coconut Reef Trattoria. We had very good pastas. We wanted to try the pizza, which is supposed to be very good, but a large tour group of Danes had come in early and cleaned them out of all of their pizza. The owner, who is from Malta by way of Richmond Hill, Ontario, is very friendly and we chatted for quite a while. Almost too long, as it turns out. As we were leaving, it started to sprinkle and by the time we were a bit more than halfway down Front Street, the skies opened up. Fortunately, the closest shelter, which we ducked under, was at ScoopD ice cream. So of course we each had a cone and then waited about 20 minutes for the rain to let up. Made it home before it started coming down again.

We were planning on going snorkeling Sunday morning, but it didn't look too promising. Sure enough, when we got up, it was still raining, but the forecast said it should stop by noon so we decided that plan B would be to take a kayak out in the afternoon. The rain did stop late in the morning so we wandered out for lunch, dodging the minor lakes that had formed on the roads. We had lunch at Sobre las Olas, where we remembered having a wonderful lobster club sandwich when we were here in 2010. We had actually been trying to go here for several days. One day they had a big tour group and were not open to the public and another time they were painting the tables out back (it's kind of dark and enclosed to eat inside). Well the sandwich certainly wasn't the way we remembered it. Mediocre at best. Maybe the cook has Sundays off or maybe it's just different ownership. Anyway, we wandered home and changed for our kayaking expedition.
We rented a tandem kayak from Tsunami (BZ$25 for 2 hours) and headed out for trip around the island. I soon realized how out of shape my upper body is. Is was a really painful ride with lots of cramps, stops and general soreness, but the water was really calm and we made it around Caye Caulker South in 2 hours and 10 minutes, which is a lot better than last time we were here and kept getting swamped by the waves.
I still find those thing really hard to control, though--tried from the front & the back, they just don't like to go straight. It really is pretty and peaceful cruising along beside the mangrove swamps, though. Almost makes the pain worthwhile. Almost. (Most of the pictures from the ride are Carol's. My camera was fogging and I couldn't keep water drops off the lens). Then, after a couple of well-earned Belikins, we headed home and ate supper (Italian sausage with diced tomatoes on a bun) at home & rested up for this morning's snorkeling trip. (It's a beautiful sunny day today--and hot!) Heading out soon.
