I am glad I arrived in India in the relatively small town of Kochi in Kerala. And that my friend Chloé was waiting for me at the airport. She has been in India for almost two months now so she knows how things work here. First thing I did at the hotel was to have a nap and a shower. After that I was kind of operational. We went for a stroll along Fort Cochin waterfront and stayed there to see the sunset. Unfortunately, it was very hazy so the sun disappeared in the haze before setting on the sea. We still managed to have a good look at the Chinese fishing nets. They are legacy of the 15th century and need at least four men to operate them at high tide. Nowadays they are more efficient as tourist attraction than to fish.
Chloé was in the need for some beach action and touristy place
. So we spent the week end in Varkala. It took us just over 1h by train to get there. The ride was fine. We had space and could sleep. The ride back in the first Monday morning train was a different story. We were packed and our bench had to accommodate 5 people. I was really glad it was rather cool. Our week end in Varkala was great. We relaxed, I tried to recover from jetlag. And most importantly Chloé could go swimming in her swimsuit, I did too of course. She was telling me that there isn't so many beaches were you can go swimming. Bikinis are not well accepted, except in resort type places. Plus that beach has lifeguards, which was reassuring as some waves were really strong. On our second day, we walked along the seashore and found the beach were all the Indian tourist go. They go in the sea in their clothes. But they don't venture far. Men stay a couple of meters away while women and kids just wait for the waves to hit their feet. Compare to the 'white' beach this one was very busy and lively.
So far I have managed to get 'no spice' food
. For me it was spicy enough but according to Indian standard it was nothing. At least I can eat it :) I was a little afraid it would be a nightmare for me to find anything mild enough. And so far no digestive problem, I hope this will go on.
