For her PhD research, Chloé works with Amritapuri University. While studying there she has accommodation at the Ashram of Amma. And she told me that I should come and have a look for myself. It was not in my travel plan but why not.
Amma is a leaving goddess and the Ashram is a place that contains the home where she was born, the small temple where she gave her first dashran, a big temple and a huge hall where she now gives her dashran
. She is very popular and the Ashram has many high rise buildings to accommodate people. Amma wasn't on the premises while I was there and apparently it's very quiet when she is not there. She was on tour in Europe. Most people in the Ashram are followers, they believe in what Amma preaches. I don’t really know what it is. I went on the orientation tour and they showed us a 20min video about Amma. But it was only about her charity work and disaster relieve actions through her NGO 'Embracing the world’. It’s really good that she does charity stuff but I would have liked to hear her to try to understand why so many people follow her.
When you live in the Ashram you get three meals a day for free. They are basic Indian dishes. If you want something a little fancier you can buy food at different stands. The food is good here and very cheap. Residents also do what is called SEVA or voluntary work to keep the Ashram running, it can be cooking, washing up, recycling and so on
. On my second and last night, we were chatting with a group when we were recruited to do the washing up at the cafe.
During my day at the Ashram I did about nothing except for walking on the beach, watching dolphins dancing, using the internet and wondering how some people can spend many years here. Everyone is very calm here. The atmosphere is very quiet. The life very simple. I might be able to understand people coming for few months to refill their battery but for longer I don’t. It is completely cut out from the rest of the world and there is nothing to do.
I am leaving from the Ashram very well rested and ready for whatever comes next.If you want to know more http://www.amritapuri.org/ashram
