Hualien is the biggest city on the east coast, nothing special. I just based myself there to explore Taroko National Park. The main attraction is the Taroko gorge. I met a guy at the hostel on the day I arrived and we decided to visit the gorge together the next day. We used the shuttle bus to do so. It is not the most efficient way as we happened to have to wait for the bus but it is the cheapest way. We still had time to see all we wanted (mainly because many of the trails in the park are close due to the cyclone that struck the island 2 months ago). So we did the few trails that were open. Shakadang trail for the crystal clear water, Lushui trail to have a look at the schist formation and the best of them: Swallow Grotto trail. The last one is where you really can appreciate the deepness of the gorge and admire the effect of the water carving its way through the lime stone.

The area is very beautiful and unique but to me it had a feel of already seen (except the horde of Chinese tourist) . I don't really know why. Maybe I was not at the best of my form to enjoy it. Indeed my throat has been bothering me since yesterday. So before going for diner I decided that it was time to get some Lemsip-like medicine. It was a good call. The women at the pharmacy was very kind and when she found out that we were planning to have dumpling for diner she invited us over and made some for us. Thankfully her daughter (recently back from Australia) was translating everything. It was really nice to be invited so spontaneously. She was very excited by the all things, especially when she found out I was from France. She gave us her address so that we could send her a postcard from our country. France is so romantic! Obviously.



Hualien est la plus grande ville sur la côte est mais n'a rien de spécial. Je me suis juste basée là comme point de départ pour visiter le parc national de Taroko. J'ai rencontré un gars à l'auberge le jour où je suis arrivée et on a décidé de visiter les gorges ensemble. On a utilisé la navette. Ce n'est pas le moyen le plus efficace (on a dû pas mal attendre) mais c'est le plus rentable. On a quand même eu le temps de voir tout ce que l'on voulait car la plupart des chemins sont fermés à cause de l'ouragan qu'il y a eu il y a 2 mois. Donc on a fait les quelques sentiers ouverts: le Shankadang pour ses vues sur les eaux cristallines; Lushui pour sa vue sur les montagnes et les pentes de schistes et le Swallow Grotto . Le meilleur pour la fin. En effet c'est là que l'on se rend vraiment compte de la profondeur de la gorge et que l'on peut admirer les effets de l'eau sur la roche.

La gorge est vraiment très belle mais j'ai un peu eu une impression de déjà-vu (si ce n'est pour la horde de touriste Chinois). Je ne sais pas trop pourquoi. Peut-être à cause de ma gorge endolorie je n'étais pas au meilleur de ma forme pour bien en profiter. Du coup, avant de dîner j'ai décidé de faire un détour par la pharmacie du coin pour acheter un truc genre Strepsil. C'était une très bonne idée. La dame qui tenait la pharmacie était vraiment gentille et quand elle a su que l'on voulait manger des dumpling elle a tout de suite proposé de nous en faire et nous à inviter chez elle. Heureusement sa fille qui vient juste de rentrer d'Australie a pu faire toute la traduction. Ça fait vraiment plaisir de se faire inviter de manière si spontanée. La dame était vraiment très contente de nous avoir pour dîner et encore plus quand elle a appris que j'étais française. Elle nous a même donné son adresse pour qu'on lui envoie une carte de nos pays respectifs. Ah la France c'est tellement romantique!
