For tourism purposes Tainan is divided into two area: Central Tainan close to the train station where all the old temples are and Anping near the sea.

Anping: I went to Anping at the week end so the old streets were very crowded and all the stands were animated. I visited the Tree House which was a warehouse under Japanese occupation. It belong to the Japan Salt Company but was abandoned after WWII. Now Banyan trees have taken the ground over and have wrapped around the brick walls. It seems that most of the building are formed by the trees. It's very cool. For lunch I lost myself in the small alleys and opted for an oyster omelet, some dip fried shrimp wonton (excellent) and a watermelon juice. All that obtained with much pointing and the recurring wonder 'Am I going to get what I tried to ask for?' I did well.

I spend a long time in the Old Fort. It was originally called Fort Zeelandia and build by the Dutch. However there is not much remaining of the Dutch fort as the place was rebuilt over and over. It was a very enjoyable place and I was a bit tired so I sat here and there to watch people. I thought that the approach of canon photography was very different depending on the demographics: group of guys would make funny pose like being blown up, group of girls would make cute pose and parents would sit their kids on it. Amusing.

Central Tainan: I did the tour recommended in the Lonely Planet, it goes around pretty much all the interesting sites. But it’s a bit long and by the end of it I was a bit templed off... Few days later I can only remember about three sites: the Confucius temple, the South Gate and the Chihkan tower, all the other temples are kind of a blurry mix. In the Confucius temple they had comprehensive signs in English about Confucius himself and his views on education. This temple was once dedicated to teaching. The Great South Gate (Da Nan Men) has most of its surrounding wall intact and has been rehabilitated into a little coffee place (which I think is a great idea). The Chihkan tower is another site left over by the Dutch but once again it has been rebuilt many times. A legend says Fort Zeelandia and the tower are connected by a tunnel (but no one could find it).



Quand il s'agit de tourisme, Tainan peut être divisé en deux parties: le centre avec tous les temples et Anping près du port.

Anping: J'y suis allée le Dimanche, du coup les vielles rues étaient très animées, il y avait du monde partout et tous les stands étaient ouverts. J'ai commencé par visiter la Maison-arbre qui sous l'occupation japonaise était un entrepôt. Il appartenait à la Japan Salt Company mais a été abandonné après la seconde guerre mondiale. Maintenant les arbres Banyans ont pris le dessus et forment les murs, le toit et le sol. C'est assez sympa. Pour le 'repas' de midi je me suis perdue dans les petites rues et je me suis arrêtée pour manger une omelette aux huîtres, puis des wontons fris aux crevettes (trop bons) et un jus de pastèque. J'ai obtenu tout cela à grand renfort de gestes et en me demandant en permanence 'est-ce que je vais bien avoir ce que j'ai essayé de commander?' Je m'en sors plutôt bien. J'ai passé le plus clair de l'après-midi dans le Vieux Fort. Quand les Hollandais l'ont construit ils l'avaient baptisé Fort Zeelandia, cependant il ne reste pas grand-chose du fort originel. Il a été reconstruit plusieurs fois. Je me suis bien baladée à l'intérieur et comme j'étais un peu crevée je me suis assise ici et là pour regarder les gens. J'ai notamment passé un bon moment à étudier comment les gens approchent la prise en photos des canons en fonction de leur tranche d'âge. Alors, les groupes de gars font des poses délirantes (genre mimer de se faire exploser), les filles font des poses mignonnes/sexy et les parents font s'asseoir leurs enfants sur le canon. Je me suis bien marrée. 

Le centre: j'ai fait le tour recommandé dans le Lonely Planet, il propose de voir plus ou moins tous les sites d'intérêts. Mais bon, c'est un peu long et à la fin je n'en pouvais plus.... et du coup quelques jours plus tard je ne me souviens vraiment que de trois sites: le temple de Confucius, la porte sud et la tour Chihkan, tous les autres temples se confondent en un vague souvenir. Dans le temple de Confucius, il y avait de bonnes explications en anglais à propos de Confucius lui-même et de sa vision de l'éducation pour tous. Ce temple était à l'origine un lieu d'enseignement. La porte sud et une des anciennes portes fortifiées de la ville et il reste la plupart des murs autour. Elle a été transformée en un petit café bien sympa. On doit la tour Chihkan aux Hollandais (encore!) mais là aussi elle ne ressemble plus beaucoup à ce qu'ils avaient construit! Il y a une légende qui dit qu'un tunnel relie le Fort Zeelandia à la tour mais personne ne l'a trouvé.
