Porsches and a waterfall

Gmünd, Carinthia, Austria

The weather gods in this part of the world obviously haven’t listened to the forecast as we woke up to rain yet again - so annoying when I want to dry the washing! From a leaflet in Reception we discovered that Frederick Porsche had lived nearby & actually built his very first Porsche in Gmund just up the road, so off we went to see the museum – a very good activity for a very wet day.

It was actually really interesting & I learned a lot from my personal handheld guide about the various engines on display from the 40s, 50s and 60s. The chap in charge kindly put on the English version of the film about Fred’s life for us – he was an amazing engineer and way ahead of his time. Upstairs were quite a few of the various models of the cars which we, but particularly R, enjoyed looking at.

The little town of Gmünd is very old, with towers and walls from the 1200s, but as it was midday, virtually everything was shut; after a spot of lunch in a bakery cafe we headed up the valley in search of a waterfall I’d read about. The weather had fined up thank goodness, and we actually saw the sun for a bit which does make everywhere look nicer.

It was a pleasant drive up the Möll valley, and as it was now fine, we stopped near the Raggaschlucht, the first waterfall in a series of 4. We decided not to do the whole 90 min circular route as it was really slippery underfoot & we didn’t fancy sliding on the steps up the gorge, so we walked the 15 mins up to the fall.

We had a nice chat with the lady on the entrance desk – fortunately she was keen to practise her English, and told us that we didn’t need to pay if we promised not to go across the bridge at the waterfall, ie. not into the gorge proper. The pic is a bit odd as there was no-one else around to take it & my camera was balanced on my bag on the floor!
