Ferry to Dover

Dunkerque, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France

The final post and the end of a great trip. We had to be at Dunkerque ferry port by 08.30 which meant a bit of an early start but at least the weather was fine. Half an hour later we reached the port (what seemed like miles of deserted roads, many roundabouts and thankfully no sign of migrants trying to get in our caravan to hitch a ride to England.

The ferry was half an hour late leaving as a) the check-in computer crashed and everything had to be done by hand, b) the seemingly hundreds of goods lorries took forever to load and c) every vehicle was entered and searched by customs/police, including ours for the first time ever. We couldn’t believe there would be room for us on board (the lorries were ENDLESS) but when we finally got there, our deck was half empty!

The crossing was smooth and trouble-free, unlike the rest of the journey – half an hour to get just a mile from the port of Dover....it didn’t get any better either, as the journey to Henley to meet up with friends took nearly 5 hours to do what should have taken 2.5, on the car park called the M25....'nuff said.

We arrived safely nonetheless, and had a lovely weekend with our caravanning friends close to the River Thames at Henley. As it was the week before the famous regatta, our time there included watching the rowers practising and partaking of afternoon tea with Pimms. Yes, R’s blazer and boater plus my posh frock and hat really did travel round Europe for 5 weeks!

Some numbers from our hols:
5 = countries stayed in (Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Italy, Belgium)
12 = number of sites stayed on
8451 (feet) = highest point visited (Austria)
26 = no of different nationalities’ number plates seen
3330 = miles travelled by us and the posh clothes!

Best number: 75(p) = cheapest litre of diesel (in Luxembourg)
Best word: Plopsaland (Belgian theme park)
Priceless: great memories
