A bike ride round Lake Bohinj

Bohinjska Bistrica, Slovenia
Another beautiful day, so we decided to give our new folding e-bikes their first proper outing with a ride round Lake Bohinj. I’d read that it was beautiful and much quieter than Bled, so with the bikes in the back of the car we drove 18km to the start of a cycle path which would keep us off the main road and was completely traffic free.

What a gem it was too – a smooth tarmac path which led us one minute next to the Sava River, the next through beautiful fields of wildflowers past farmers working on the land. Then we were amongst woodland glades with dappled sun-made patterns, riding past tiny hamlets where the hay was drying on racks and logs were stockpiled for the winter. It gave us a glimpse of life in rural Slovenia, accompanied by the rushing sound of the turquoise river with a backdrop of snow-capped mountains – I’ve come over all poetic, but it really was a delight.

We eventually came to the shores of Lake Bohinj and stopped for a well earned drink on a tiny beach; the only people we saw were a few walkers, several other cyclists and one couple riding with a small trailer attached holding their dog! We rode about half way round the lake on a gravel/stony track until the path deteriorated so much that it was virtually impossible to ride, and retraced our steps to the beach where we rewarded ourselves with lunch – great value, free wifi and fish swimming around just underneath the restaurant window.

The bikes performed brilliantly and certainly made the rises in terrain much easier to cope with (once I’d twigged that you actually have to change gear as well as use the battery power!). They are comfortable to ride and you can use as much or as little assistance as you want – I used mainly pedal power with a little help on the inclines, and although we rode 15 miles, I suffered no hip pain at all, which was the whole point of getting these bikes. An excellent day.
