France & the Vosges mountains

Colmar, Alsace, France
We had a fairly leisurely start today, but were woken very early by noise – the loudest dawn chorus I have ever heard! Added to that, rain was falling loudly on the caravan roof so we gave up and got up. We rejoined the autoroute (only 7km away) and headed for Luxembourg and the thought of cheap diesel – little things do please Hubby! At €1.19 a litre, Lux has the
cheapest diesel in western Europe and its no dearer on or off the autoroute, so we just topped up there. The fuel stations were all hugely busy (no wonder) but we got our diesel and continued southwards.
We had decided to head for a very nice sounding site in Munster, a small town in the Vosges near Colmar, on a very pretty route over the mountains. It was very quiet traffic-wise and perfectly doable with the caravan as the hairpins weren’t too hairpinny and the gradients not too bad. The scenery was wonderful, all varieties of trees in all shades of green plus
alpine-style houses with steeply-pitched roofs and decorative shutters. The skies were blue and the sun was shining – this was MUCH better than the roadworks yesterday.
However, when we arrived at our chosen site (one with very good reviews and called Parc de la Fecht) we found hand-written notices saying they had no vacancies until 28th May – no idea why, and the lady wasn’t forthcoming, so after a bit of nifty reversing and consulting the site books, we headed off to Colmar and Clair Vacances. I am so glad we did, as it was
really nice: very welcoming reception, large marked pitches with sun or shade, plants and flowers everywhere, beautifully clean facilities and temps of 27°C. Just what the doctor ordered.
Hubby played with his satellite tuner and wifi devices whilst I read a book in the sunshine – this is how holidays should be. We strolled round the site, which was more than half empty at this time of year, nodding to people as we went; it was strange to note that the only people who didn’t make eye contact or speak as we passed by were the British...the rest were Dutch or German and much more friendly. Ah well, the sun was still shining, the birds were still singing.
More strolling was followed by a bbq in the subshine - this really is a lovely site and thoroughly recommended.
