Munich, Bavaria, Germany
Well, today was another lovely day weather-wise but sadly not health-wise: I woke up feeling really queasy after about 5 hours intermittent sleep, but managed to get off & out for our trip to Munich. The roads (including the autobahn) were fairly quiet, it being Sunday there were no lorries – in 30 miles we only saw one. How DO they deliver their goods ready for the new week?
The sat-nav took us straight there, but on arrival we found that their car park was full, so were directed to the factory car park up the road. We had a scant 5cm height clearance at the entrance (Hubby proceeded VERY cautiously!) but all was fine.
We went to the museum first, (pleased with OAP discount at entry) and strolled around the exhibits, one of us much more gingerly than the other. The building is ultra-modern, all glass, steel and swirls and fortunately had a translation of all the info in English; the displays were excellent, eg. many motor bike models suspended in layers over 2 floors and gleaming examples of ancient & modern cars. Must have taken hours to polish them!
Hubby loves anything technological and was delighted with the history of the engines and motor bikes. I was just glad to find a toilet sign...I soon felt better and we went to the temporary exhibition area, currently showing Rolls Royce - the picnic hampers had to be seen to be believed.
We then crossed the airbridge to BMW Welt, the home of all the current models plus motor bikes you could sit on for pics etc, so of course we did. This was not actually as interesting as the museum, but this area was free so we wandered for a while then went for an ice cream - 30+° and its not the only thing melting!
We decided to forego Dachau as I didn't feel up to wandering about in the sun and headed back via the motorway. It was a slightly strange experience to be bowling along in the inside lane doing just under 100mph – there is no maximum speed limit on German autobahns, but you have to really keep your wits about you. We arrived safely back at the site where we spent a nice afternoon sitting in the shade, reading and chatting with our English neighbours. They had been to Dachau and enjoyed it, but when they told us how much was walking outside, we felt we’d made the right decision.
Later that afternoon I had my 3rd bump (and hopefully the last one) – on stepping out of the caravan, I walked straight into the open window with my temple and eye...not a happy bunny. Think I’ll have a bit of a scar, but I got cold water on my cheekbone straight away & hopefully will have no swelling – watch this space...
Some painkillers later, we went to the camp restaurant for a meal: Hubby had a huge turkey salad while I chose Zander fish steak with rice & sauce; my German dictionary app told me it was pike or perch – it was white fish anyway, with a lovely delicate flavour and all washed down with a local beer. Should sleep well tonight, then!
