Selcuk, Izmir, Turkey
Some travellers "collect" UNESCO listed sites. We have inadvertently collected saints' tombs. St. Peter's in Rome, St. Philip at Hierapolis, St. John the Evangelist at Selcuk. Merymana, near Ephesus, is the last place the Virgin Mary lived after fleeing her home, with St. John, after the crucifixion. A church is built over the foundations of her house. Had we found Antioch, we would have found the tomb of St Paul, but we could not find Antioch.

Aphrodisias was a Roman town built to honour Aphrodite, goddess of love . Again, all the primary features of a Roman city. The agora, or town square or forum, was over two hundred metres long, and beside it they had built a second agora that featured a pool, also two hundred metres long, surrounded by colonnades. Must have been an extraordinary feature in its day.

The museum had dozens and dozens of marble statues, most missing two arms, sundry legs, and heads. Again incredibly rich statuary. The museum had hundreds of friezes on display as well, to the point of saturation.

After Aphrodisias on the way to Selcuk, we attempted to find the remains of Antioch. In spite of some sign posting, and slow rural roads, we must has passed it by. We must have something left to do another time!

Eventually got into Selcuk in time to go and do some shopping, and to have a chat with our favourite carpet seller who we had met previously. Seems to be a young man with high ideals - highly commendable but we suspect he might be in the wrong trade.
