Kastraki, Thessaly, Greece
We drove up Mt. Olympus, first national park in Greece (1937). Incredible scenery as we ascended through the mists. Alternating pines and deciduous trees were beautiful. We had hoped to explore the Monastery of St Dionysiou but discovered it had been destroyed by German troops in WW2. However, a few feet away from the monastery ruins we met Demetrius and his friend, 2 guys in their 60s. Demetrius had hiked up 600 metres from Litohoro, and his pal came to pick him up, bringing home grown olives, bread rolls, home brewed wine and Ouzo, which they invited us to share with them, as an Easter greeting! Such great genuine hospitality as we chatted in English/German and sign language. Then drove further up to the trail head for the walking tracks at Prionia, where there is a great cafe with real log fire and hot coffee, as temperature was about 6 degrees.

Drove down and on to Meteora! What a find, probably not on our list had brother Ross not suggested it . Centre for European rock climbing on any of the amazing rock formations there that are not topped by a monastery. Beautiful camp almost under the rocks, lots of family campers out for Easter and equal numbers of rough, tough rock climbers with helmets and all the gear.
