Uppsala and the Bishop Controller!

Uppsala, Swedish Lakeland, Sweden
Drove to Uppsala, ancient university city "drenched in history", now home to Sweden's first female archbishop.

Met up with Bee, who had been an AFS exchange student in Brisbane in 2001, same time as our Finnish student, Johanna . We had last met Bee in Brisbane in about 2004. Bee took us to an outdoor lunch venue - traditional setting where the men having a business lunch were wrapped on red blankets to keep warm!

Then a conducted tour of the city - saw several typical Uppland rune stones then the huge Gothic cathedral, then the castle (Uppsala Slott). The story goes that the king, Gustav Vasa, who is buried in the cathedral, wanted to keep order after he had declared that Sweden was no longer catholic, and was having dissent issues with the former catholic bishop, so built 2 bastions to his magnificent castle/ place in 1550s one named the Styrbiskup or "Bishop Controller." The cannons on the bastion point directly at the cathedral, 600 metres away!

Said good bye to Bee and wondered around the old town a bit more, then back to camp . Beautiful sunny day until about 11 pm, but getting colder.
