Spectacular day, back to Switzerland.

Lucerne, Lucerne, Switzerland
Left the camp, in pouring rain again!! Crossed the bridge and we were back in Switzerland again. No customs, or visible border post here, so where we would have got our Swiss road toll form if we did not already have one, who knows?

Stopped at Walensee, third largest lake in Switzerland, for coffee . Then on west to the Klausen pass through the canton of Uri. Spectacular drive up a multitude of hairpin bends, made all the more interesting by a convoy (about 8) of large army trucks with learner drivers, all coming the opposite direction! Stopped at the top for lunch, at 1952 metres, but too wet and cold to get out to look at the tiny chapel (or buy souvenirs) so we continued on down the other side of the pass - at times the rain stopped and the scenery really was beautiful. Pretty stunning drive, even in the rain.

Stopped at Burglen, home of the legendary William Tell. Went around the little museum, with really good video in English about him and about the Gottard Pass. Then looked at the mural on the church wall and the little William Tell chapel - inside murals of the story of the apple, and also inside, a statue of St Sebastian.

Drove on to Altdorf, where William actually shot the arrow at the apple on his son's head . Mural monument in the Main Street a bit difficult to look at, while driving past.

Arrive at camp after driving along one of the forks of Lake Lucerne. Our friends Helen and Werner arrived to collect us for the highlight of the day. They had been host parents for Mark when on his AFS exchange year to Switzerland in 2004. In brilliant sunshine, drove to Emmetten then took the 8 man gondola up the Neiderbauen mountain. Watched hang gliders taking off and floating down the valley, a short walk then dinner. The restaurant overlooked Lake Lucerne from 1775 metres and the candlelight dinner was magical as the sun set over the lake. Thousands of photos!

Interesting experience to go down the mountain again in the little, unlit gondola in the DARK but we arrived safe and drove back to camp. Fantastic evening and great to catch up with these lovely friends.
