Black Forest tour

Bisingen, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany
Started off at the German Clock Museum in Furtwangen. Obviously, hundreds of clocks and watches, not all cuckoo clocks, but starting with the history of time keeping using sundials, through the history of clock making in the Black Forest. This was eventually almost pushed out by the mass produced clocks in USA, including a Dollar Ingersoll pocket watch. However, craftsmen continue locally and the collection was really interesting.

Then drove to Schonwald and stopped to look at a really touristy shop . Wood carvings, clocks, garden ornaments, toys - a real Aladdin's Cave that went up 4 floors. Overpowering in their numbers.

Next stop the Triberg waterfall. Not Niagara, and very tame compared with Norway, but good to walk around and admire the 7 cascades, falling 163 metres in a thickly wooded valley. Reached the town of Triberg at the bottom and looked at the Black Forest Museum. (Schwarzenwalden Museum) Most interesting was seeing several orchestrions, that played as a full orchestra from a case 6 foot high when you inserted a Euro, and a collection of fairground and barrel organs. Lots of pianola type instruments too. Collection of local costumes, including amazing hats that looked like Christmas trees.

Stopped in the cafe for a not very inspiring Black Forrest Cherry Cake (but you have to try all these things)

Had to at least look in the touristy shops, including one boasting "Over 1000 clocks". Again, overpowering in numbers, and people too, so we moved on.

Then walked to the church of Our Lady In The Fir, (Maria in Der Tanne, also Wallfahrtskirche ) site of two miracles in the 1600s and now a beautiful baroque church, although we did also see the small miraculous spring outside.

Hiked back up the hill to the Boomer and set off northeast towards Hohenzollern Castle (Burg Hohenzollern) Much of the country we drove across was rich farming land, obviously cleared forest. Arrive at the car park of the castle to camp for the night. Who was there? Rob and Robyn, who we were not supposed to meet until tomorrow! Great catch up of their Iceland tales over dinner.
