Tarifa, Andalusia, Spain and Canary Islands
Taxi into Tarifa to catch the ferry to Tangier in Morocco. Takes one hour. Immediately on landing, we were approached by Mejid ("Magic") who we engaged as our guide for the day. First a tour by minibus of the new side of the city, with lots of anecdotal info on movies, movie stars and writers, for which Tangier was known in the 60s. Scene of "Poor Little Rich Girl"," Inception" and "The Bourne Ultimatum." Coffee in the cafe that featured in the former.

Then we went through the Medina or Old City . So glad we had our guide, as we were not hassled at all. Lots of useful info. from Magic, like the difference between Sunni and Shi'ite Moslems in Morocco. Looked at the poultry market -yuk- and then the fish market. Unlike Vietnam last year, all sorts of food and produce mixed together. Numerous narrow lanes of brass work, wood work, sewing, and all sorts of souvenirs. Look at the Grand Socco - big square - and the Church of England church with its interesting graveyard of Lord This and Lady That. Then a mosque from outside (not allowed inside in Tangier) and Petit Socco - small square.

Then we went carpet shopping. No intention of buying but we and the Robs bought one each! Actually kilims (made without a loom) by the Tuareg/Berber or Blue people of rural Morocco. Great fun choosing then buying, lots more to look at in the same shop - like an Alladin's Cave with a fantastic views of city and sea from its roof 4 floors up. Brass and silver, jewellery and pottery and much more.

Needed lunch after that and our guide showed us where to eat good local food. Then we climbed up to the Kasbah, (Moorish Fortress), Kasbah Museum and its neglected garden, then looked down at the beach and harbour redevelopment before looking at the Grand Mosque, more fascinating tiny shops and alleyways, buildings of varying architecture before making our way back to the ferry. What a great day.

Arrived back at camp exhausted after our first "taste" of Africa!
