Lisbon Day 1

Lisbon, Estremadura, Portugal
Drove along a bit more of Algarve coast then hit the motorway for Lisbon. Found a free camp site on the bank of the river Tagus, looking towards the amazing 25de Abril bridge. Was designed by designers of the San Fransisco - Oakland Bay bridge but looks like Golden Gate Bridge and is spectacular anyway. Impressive huge statue of Christ the King overlooking the river - Rob thought we were in Rio!

Lisbon is a big, spread out city, so bussing it our only option . Took an open top bus ride, until it poured with rain.

Got off at the Gulbenkian Museum. Mr Calouste Gulbenkian made his fortune from "Black Gold" and was an amazing collector of art, ancient and more modern. He gave the collection to Portugal when he died and it is housed in a purpose built museum likened to a motorway toll booth! Great inside, so leisurely and peaceful. Boy, did he had some fabulous art from so many of the masters, as well as tiles, carpets and tapestries, and Lalique glass and jewels. Also incunabula - new word meaning "books printed, not written before 1500," and he had a collection of beautifully illustrated sacred books and bibles. Not really enough time to look properly as we had to catch a bus.

Continued the tour and finally got back to camp. Windy and noisy. Sunset shots of the bridge and statue. More rain in the night but free!
