Lisbon day 3

Lisbon, Estremadura, Portugal
Rob and Rob camped overnight at the dealership.

We walked to the Jeronimos Monastery, really a wonderful place, cloisters so large, quiet and spacious with exquisite stone carving and some more lovely tiling pictures . The church dark and overpowering, ( have we seen too many churches???) but we acknowledged the tomb of Vasco da Gama. So surrounded by tourists, we could not even get a photo.

Then hopped on our bus tour again and did the round circuit of the area we had seen 2 days previously. Statue of the Marquess of Pombal in a huge roundabout. He rebuilt the city after an earthquake in 1755. Hopped off at the central area and had lunch in a pavement cafe, overlooking Praca Dom Pedro IV. Tried char-grilled sardines - much larger than those you get in a tin! John asked about buying a local beer mug. The waiter wrapped one and gave it to him!

Walked to the funicular railway (one of four, decorated as art projects) and went up the hill for the view over all Lisbon, then down again.

Walked through the older part of town. Students doing some sort of sit-in in the main pedestrian area, and others doing a "chant-in" on a corner, all dressed in black formal dress .

Since the earthquake in the 1800s, all buildings were rebuilt on a square pattern, same shape and height, and all earthquake resistant.

Came to the river bank, to Terreiro do Paco (Palace Square ) and walked through even older areas of docklands to the Fado Museum. Lots of tiled buildings in the old town.
Fado is an old genre of Portuguese singing accompanied by viola and Portuguese guitar. Started in working class suburbs, went through shows, theatre, movie themes, and cafe/bar venues. Lovely to listen to much music, watch old film clips and learn a lot about it all. Bought the CD.

Back to camp to collect the Boomer and meet Rob and Rob, finally freed by Mitsubishi, at the commercial camp site. Need to do some washing tomorrow.
