Tiles. Another Templar castle.

Cuacos de Yuste, Extremadura, Spain and Canary Islands
We have seen beautiful tiles everywhere, but especially in Portugal. Either decorating the edges of windows, as full wall covering or as panels, mostly religious or a story of some sort. We are amazed to find how old some of them are, several hundred years sometimes.

Set off from our very wet camp site, as it had rained all night . Drove across the Serra Estrala range, up to 1400 metres. We had anticipated a beautiful drive but we travelled in the clouds most of the way. Scenery nonetheless lovely.
Stopped for coffee at a small village, where we ordered then sat down in semi-darkness and the aged locals continued their chatting and drinking, propping up the bar at 10 a.m. The store seemed to sell everything for everyone, if you could find it!

By chance, stopped at Monsanto village. Described as "the most Portuguese village in Portugal", the streets got so narrow as we climbed the hill, we had to come down backwards and walk, then walk/ climb to the castle at the top. Fantastic views. Another Knights Templar castle, similar vintage as Tomar. Interesting coincidence after yesterday at Tomar.

Drove to the village of Cuacos de Yuste. Called our friends, Marilyn, my old school friend and husband Pip, who came to meet us and we followed them up to the little house that they are renting in the country. Great evening chatting, catching up, eating and drinking outside in the the cool. Beautiful outlook from their house over surrounding country.
