Travel day . Bayeux Tapestry.

Saturday, October 04, 2014
Arromanches-les-Bains, Lower Normandy, France
Travelled through pretty farming country, noting the changing colours of the leaves as the autumn rushes in. Lots of grapes and apples.

Passed nearly to Chateau Fallaise, birthplace of William The Conqueror, otherwise known as William The Bastard!

Then onto Bayeux, home of the famous Bayeux Tapestry . Housed in a special building, the amazing thing about the tapestry is its age (made around 1080) and the hard life it had- at times, hung from the walls and columns of Bayeux Cathedral. 68 metres long, 58 scenes tell the story of medieval France leading up to and then depicting the invasion of England at the Battle of Hastings in1066. Even knowing about this tapestry, it is a truly remarkable piece of embroidery( not a "tapestry" at all.) So good, in fact, we walked around with our commentary twice, then on to the museum etc. upstairs. Missed the film about the making of the tapestry, too late in the day, so bought the DVD instead.

Found a cheap campsite overlooking the Normandy Beaches,
