Paris day 3

Paris, Île-de-France, France
Much better weather when we set off. Took the train and metro direct to the Louvre. We had been "warned" how vast it is, but not how long it took to get in - queues for tickets, audio guides, toilets and left luggage all added up to an hour.

Had to see the Mona Lisa, of course, so we did . Very impressive, beautiful and a larger painting than I had though. Looked at some more of Leonardo Da Vinci's painting, then much sculpture from Greece, Rome, including Venus de Milo and Egypt including numerous sphinxes.

Then we tried to get out of that wing to get lunch and found half the exit doors shut - some sort of security scare, we assume - so it look a long time to get to lunch in a much-too-small cafe area.

After lunch looked at a great new display of Islamic art, sited under a purpose-built free-form roof. Great display, not crowded, and good info boards. Fabulous tiles and beaten brass-ware.
Then looked at some Michelangelo sculptures, including "The Dying Slave" as well as Cupid and Psyche by Canova.

Enough was enough, unfortunately. Our legs and feet told us so, as well as our brains. The building is so vast and signage not the best, means you seemed to do a lot of back tracking, going downstairs only to go upstairs straight after! Have to come again, arrive even earlier and stay longer.

Left the Louvre and caught the open bus again. Changed to the other route and drove around Montmartre. Glimpses of Sacré-Coeur, passed the Moulin Rouge, and heard lots of historical titbits about this "interesting" quarter of Paris.

Home after walking what seemed like miles downhill underground to our train platform. (I used to think parts of the London Underground were "deep" but nothing compared to the "Opera" station.)
