Hill 60 and Delirium Tremens!!!!

Kemmel, West Flanders, Belgium
First we set off to search for Hill 60. Here there is a monument to the Australian soldiers who tunnelled in under the hill and then blew up enemy lines from below. Famed from the movie of the same name.

Next the Paschedale Museum of 1917, at Zonnebeke . Again, a whole museum dedicated to one battle campaign. We felt we were getting museumed-out! However, we have seen only a fraction geographically but have a much better understanding of the conditions, losses and tragedy of the whole war, especially of the Somme campaign.

Lunch - the boys had a glass of Delirium Tremens Belgian Beer. Same brew as Fiona had brought home in 1997, in same brandy shaped glass with pink elephants on the glass and on the opaque grey bottles.

Saw smoke from chimney pots - winter must be coming!

Then did a drive past numerous other cemeteries to look at Tyne Cot, largest Commonwealth War Cemetery of any war, anywhere in the world.

Back to a different camp, at Kemmel, south of Ypres, needing to do washing etc tomorrow. Rob and Robs last night!

After dinner, drove back to Ypres. Each night, rain or snow, since 11/11/1928, the buglers of the local fire brigade sound the Last Post at the Menin Gate in the centre of town. There was a moving ceremony with Scottish pipe band, many medaled military and a big crowd, wreath laying and more music. So glad we were there.

Back to camp, last night for Rob and Rob before they drive to Raab and fly home next week.
