First stop Clava Cairns. A set of prehistoric stone burial circles dating from 3000-4000BC, set in a beautiful beech grove. Two passage graves, a ring cairn and a kerb cairn, with several circles of standing stones. Peaceful in the sunny damp morning air before the first tourist bus arrived.

Then on to Culloden battlefield site . The Visitor Centre opened in 2009 and was greatly changed from our last visit in 1989. Re-enactments, conducted tour, and excellent interpretative centre. The last battle fought on British soil, 16th April 1746, saw the defeat of Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobites for good.

Fish and chips for lunch at the small village of Helmsdale (Valley of the Helmets).

Driving up the east coast, good weather and beautiful rolling moor and coastal scenery.

Then to John O'Groats, NOT the most northerly tip of Scotland( see tomorrow). John had wanted to come here since 1989 and today he made it. Looked around the small village and took the usual photos with the signpost, then moved from the small settlement to the headland at Duncansby Head to camp.

There we met Nigel and Sandra, an English couple travelling in their UK Motorhome around Scotland for 6 months. They had just recently traveled the States in their USA Motorhome and, over a few wines, gave us lots of tips about travelling there next year.

However, as we tried to get to sleep later, the howling wind and rain, coupled with the buffeting wind rocking the truck, caused us to move camp back to the village at 10.30 pm!
