Gairloch, Scotland, United Kingdom
6 degrees overnight but woke to sunny dry day. Walked from the camp up onto the cliff top nearby.

Drove through Durness, to Balnakeil Village, where we could look across to Cape Wrath, most westerly point up here . Military shooting range but not active today.

Took the North and West Highlands Tourist Route, travelling west through beautiful rugged mountain and coastal scenery. Lochs, pine trees, mountains and lots of wild deer all day. Single track road with passing places, and almost no traffic. Saw a few Tesco home delivery vans, a necessity up here, so far from large cities, although every small village has its SPAR grocery shop. Tried a comparison with Norway or the Lofortens, but they are all more spectacular.

We passed Ardvreck castle, used as a prison in the 1600s.

Reached Ullapool, where we had lunch in the ferry car park. There are regular ferries to the Orkney Islands - next time.

We reached Corrieshalloch Gorge (Ugly Hollow) a canyon 18 metres wide and 61 metres deep, where the Measach Falls tumble 46 metres down the gorge and the Victorian Suspension Bridge built in 1867 wobbles as you cross it!

Then around Loch Ewe - so large, deep and with good access to the sea it was used as a naval harbour in WW2 and was packed with ships all the time.

Drove to Gairloch. A pretty fishing and tourist village, on the shore of Loch Gairloch, that was the same name as the property John's mother's family owned in North Queensland years.
Finally found a camp for the night at the side of Loch Maree.
