Londonderry

Donegal, County Donegal, Ireland
The camp site we stayed in was ON the border - the Irish Free State/the Republic of Ireland was over the fence.

Drove to the city of Londonderry . Originally called Derry, the city only became Londonderry when the London Livery companies set up branches there on the 1800s.

So much history here. Walked along the walls, looking at canons, including Roaring Meg, used in the Siege of Derry in 1689. The story of the Apprentice Boys' actions in shutting the gates of the city against the Jacobites.

The old church of St. Augustine, on the site of the original cathedral. The present cathedral of St Columb, first non-catholic cathedral built in Northern Ireland in 1633. The wife of one of the bishops there wrote "Amazing Grace" and " Once in Royal David's City".

"The Troubles" started here in 1968 and continued for 30 years. All those names I had heard over the years. We visited Bogside, the largely Catholic side of Londonderry. Amazing murals on the walls of the houses. The memorial to the hunger strikers who died in prison (more familiar names) in 1981. Another memorial, to Bloody Sunday, Jan 1972.

Then we went to the excellent museum that gave us the history from Roman times - Romans, Vikings and Normans all came to Derry. All the way to the present day, where Derry is trying to create a new, optimistic and vibrant city out of its dark past.

Left the city and drove over the border. Another - our LAST - country. Ireland. Complete absence of signs to tell us where we were, however!!!

Stayed on a small farm near Donegal, where the owner, Colette, had set up a Happy Glamping business. Comfortable cabins to stay in long term, but also spaces to park Motorhomes.
