Drove to Exeter, took Park and Ride bus to the city centre - so sensible. Another glorious sunny but chilly day. Everyone out busy Christmas shopping.

Looked at the beautiful cathedral, originally built in 1114 in Norman (Romanesque) style, then rebuilt in Decorated Gothic style between 1270 and 1350, with more beautifully carved Misericords, like in Limerick . The choir were rehearsing, an extra treat. The beautiful ceiling is the longest continuous medieval vaulted stone ceiling in the world, 96 metres long. Lovely stained glass and lots of light, unlike many Gothic cathedrals.

Looked at the castle walls, all that remains of the original Rougemont castle built in 1068, (the buildings inside being newer, late 1800s-1905) and then its gardens and moat.

Then John tried to do a tour of the Exeter Underground Passages. They were started in the 1300s to supply water to the cathedral and, later, to the town. A system under the city that carried the lead, then the iron, water pipes. Not enough bookings so he missed out and we had to be content with the museum display and video. Next time.

Drove on to near Dorchester to camp on a farm. Our LAST night camping for 2014 - we survived it all!
