On the way to Kruger

Benoni, Gauteng, South Africa
Ha ah. Chris hit the wrong button on his watch and accidentally put them on Edmonton time. When the alarm rang, while they thought it was awfully dark for the morning, they got up and showered, Shelly blew dried her hair, and the Chris said, "I think it is 3:15". They went back to bed!

Breakfast was eggs, pork sausages, bacon, tomatoes, fruit ..... Anything you could want, including Nutella. The car was packed and we were ready to go by 8:30.

The country is fairly flat and brown, although the grass is turning green as it is their spring. It looks like the landscape between Edmonton and Calgary. What is amazing are the Jacaranda trees. They are huge and purple and stand out amongst the green foliage.

We just hit a toll road and missed the pay booth. A white African rugby player look alike runs past our car and tried to lift up the gate thinking that we had paid and that the boom wasn't working. We got things figured and were in our way.

The earth is red coloured like PEI. The landscape has gone from prairie to rolling hills, and almost mountains. We have seen baboons already. Given the names of some of the accommodations and restaurants we have to assume there are crocodiles in the rivers.

It is about 1 PM and we have arrived Malelane Gate at Kruger National Park. A half an hour of filing out forms to get into the park, we are on our way.

We spent the afternoon driving through the park. We saw all of the big five except for the water buffalo. What an amazing experience. More details follow in up-coming posts.

We arrived at the Sabie River Bush Lodge. It is beautiful. We had a great meal and went to bed early ready for a big safari day tomorrow. We expected that the big hippo standing just outside or deck would return every night.
