Pot Holes

Kempton Park, Gauteng, South Africa
Our day started with another delicious breakfast. Shelly had a long night, not feeling well from something she ate. Good news is that she was OK by the time we left at about 8:30.

We saw a place called the Big Swing and watched a couple of people take their courageous steps and scream as they were released into the canyon . They swung back and forth and when they stopped were released at the bottom of the canyon. None of us spent any adrenalin trying it.

Our next stop was a place called God's Window. We trekked up the stairs to see all the vantage points to a marvelous view. We have stopped at a few roadside vendors and have purchased a variety of things: a mask, a side table carved from one piece of wood, a wooden bowl, a wooden basket carved with the big five.

Around the corner was Berlin Falls. Ralph has been handing out suckers to little kids as we see them at these locations. The prices were much higher here so we didn't purchase anything.

We realized we had about 450 more kilometers to go so hopped in the car to make time. After we hit a gas station and filled up the tank and our tummies (they had a hamburger fast food joint there ) we hit the road...literally. We were on side roads that had "POTHOLE !" signs . They weren't kidding. We hit a few, although driving on the left side made it more difficult to straddle them. Actually there were so many that when we hit a really big one we blew a tire.

Chris and Brad figured out where the jack was and quickly changed the tire. We were off again. Now we had to detour to a VERY rough road for about 15 kilometers. Between the gas station to the main highway, including the detour, we had about 50 kilometers of hell. The detour road, washboard gravel, also had speed bumps!!!!

We missed the car drop off time in Jo'burg by about two hours. We got dropped off at the hotel and then Ralph and Chris took the car back. Here is the good news.....it had rained on the trip, although it was dry when the tire was changed, the spare was a full size, the car contract included coverage for damaged tires AND late drop off full day charges, we had eaten before we were detoured, and the hotel rooms are perfect.

We ended the evening having slap mooses and off to bed.
